In the past decade, approximately 17 % of the world's photovoltaic capacity has been installed in China, especially in the northwestern desert areas. The impacts of the construction and operation of large-scale photovoltaic power plants (PPPs) on local ecological environments have become urgent scientific issues in regional environmental .
Wang et al. (2023) proposed an optimal pathway for achieving carbon neutrality through PV power stations and optimizing the deployment of PV and wind power stations in China. However, there has been an insufficient exploration of the potential and benefits of CPPS construction in China's Sandy and Gobi deserts, necessitating additional research .
Our results show that between 2007 and 2019, the area of PV power stations in northwestern China increased to 722.0 km 2, with the most rapid increase between 2013 and 2019. Most of the PV power stations in northwestern China are in clusters (i.e., PV parks), and most of them are small (less than 1 km 2 ).
According to our dataset, China has a total of 2467.7 km 2 ground-mounted PV power stations in 2020. The top three largest provinces refer to Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Qinghai, whose PV.
By the end of 2017, the photovoltaic power generation capacity of Qinghai has ranked first in China, and the number of photovoltaic power plants has ranked second in China. In 2018, it achieved 216 hours of continuous clean energy for power supply and reduced energy emissions to zero.

6 FAQs about [The distance between photovoltaic panels and the ground in Northwest China]
What is the difference between 0 & 1 in a PV power station map?
Meanwhile, only two kinds of values are in the PV power station map, where 0 stands for the non-PV regions while 1 represents the PV power stations. In addition, the provided PV dataset could be loaded into GIS software such as ArcGIS and QIS for data visualization and spatial analysis.
Is solar photovoltaic technology developing in China?
Contributions from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, are predicted to increase by 600% from 2009 to 2035 [ 1 ], and solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is developing rapidly in China [ 2 ].
How does vegetation affect photovoltaic power conversion efficiency?
The growth of vegetation blocks solar radiation and thus affects the power conversion efficiency of photovoltaics, and the vegetation around PPPs can easily ignite. In the studied PPP, all the vegetation in front of the photovoltaic panels was removed at the end of September, exposing completely bare soils.
How will photovoltaic agriculture affect China's poverty alleviation plan?
The implementation of photovoltaic agriculture will have a positive impact on China's poverty alleviation plan. In addition to creating jobs, it will significantly improve the living standards of people in impoverished areas in the northwestern China .
How do photovoltaic panels affect land use distribution?
The installation of PPPs has changed the land use distribution . The rainwater-concentrating and sheltering effects of photovoltaic panels have altered the soil moisture conditions, micrometeorology, and water resource utilization efficiency, thereby affecting ecosystem service functions , , , .
What is the vegetation around a photovoltaic system (PPP)?
The vegetation around the PPP mainly includes Tamarix elongata, Agropyron desertorum, Suaeda glauca, and Cirsium segetum as well as small distributions of Peganum harmala, Festuca glauca, Nitraria tangutorum and Lycium chinense. The photovoltaic panels have upper and lower layers with an inclination angle of 37°.
